It`s John Cale you hear in the movie Shrek. Rufus Wainwright`s interpretation is on the Shrek soundtrack. The version used on The OC, West Wing, Without a Trace and Crossing Jordan is by the late, great Jeff Buckley.

Theres also an alternit version of the Lyrics... here it is.

"Hallelujah"

Now I`ve heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don`t really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you
To a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Maybe I have been here before
I know this room, ive walked this floor
I used to live alone before i knew you
ive seen your flag on the marmolage
love is not a victory march
its a cold and its a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

There was a time
you let me know
whats real and going on below
but now you never show it to me do you.
and remember when i moved in you
the holy dark was moving too
and every breath we drew was Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Maybe theres a god above
and all i learned from love
was how to shoot at someone, who outdrew you
and its not a cry you can hear at night
its not somebody thats seen the light
its a cold and its a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah,
Hallelujah, Hallelujah,
Hallelujah, Hallelujah,
Hallelujah, Hallelujah,

I love the song as well; however I have heard a female singer singing it and was really struck by it and now cannot find out who it is. I know Sheryl Crow does a cover of it but not the one I am looking for; this one has a very pure voice. Any ideas?

KD Lang just released a version of "Hallelujah" in July of this year on her album "Hymns of the 49th Parallel". It`s a beatiful rendition.

Hope this helps....

Leonard Cohen performed the original of Hallelujah, Jeff Buckleys is more popular and thats the one you usually hear on tv shows, its used all the time because Jeffs strong and un-naturally high vocals are really emtionally provoking. i prefer Leonard Cohen`s version because in stark contrast to Buckleys voice Cohens is incredibly deep. yeh Buckleys version of Hallelujah was also used in the second episode of the oc as ryan tells marissa he has to move back to chino, a really beautiful scene. if you like Hallelujah listen to Into My Arms by Nick Cave another really great emotional song, awesome lyrics peace out
ps. dont talk about the last episode of the oc lol we havent seen it in aussie and i love that show lol
