My tentative conclusion is that most instrumentalists know even less of their own instruments than abbreviated orchestration texts (consult these first). It's amazing to me how few brass players, for example, seem to have a glimmer about the harmonic series--on which their instruments are predicated! Worse than that is their utter lack of curiosity about what is really happening in the music and their militantly anti-intellectual antipathy toward music theory. They really do tend to behave like trained monkeys. When was the last time you came upon an orchestral musician, other than the conductor, actually perusing the score?

If you want practical information about an instrument, however, you're always much better off confronting your musician in the flesh. Make him actually demonstrate on his instrument, and take everything single thing he says, every word he mouths, cum grano salis.

Y'ALL, Instead of trying to play the forth octave F, just switch over to piccolo. It's much easier!!!!

Who cares what the highest note is? Nobody would EVER want to hear it anyway seeing as most flutists don't even sound that great in the lower high range!!!!!It's not like you'll see a high F in the music that you'll will play...and if you do then kill me!!!!!

boy this is an old topic!! here here bassoon player, what matters is how you play those high notes, not if you can just hit them.

I imagine the highest notes could only be heard by dogs anyway
