My flute teacher is making me pick a solo for solo and ensemble for next year. Because I prefer a challenge, I was leaning toward Sonatine by Dutilleux.
If anyone has any other suggestions for a harder leveled solo, I`d be very happy!
I`ve already played:
Poulenc- Sonata for practice and was bored with it within a week.
Telemann- Suite in A minor. Played that last year for S&E
Chaminade- Concertino. didnt like it
Debussy- Syrinx. boring.
Mozart- Concerto in G. Interlochen audition.

I have performed Polonaise and Badinare by Bach for a state contest- it was an advanced version, very impressive...
If you can pull off runs at the speed of light ( ), go with the advanced, modified version...
To be honest, though, I would go with the original version because the new version is...well, it just doesnt have that elegance that the original does. I am sorry to say that I do not know the arranger nor publisher of the version I played (the concert was a LONG time ago!). Plus, my old director kinda shoved me and that piece together...so I wasnt really happy about all of it...

The Dutilleux is a HUGE challenge! It, and the Sancan Sonatine, both dedicated to Gaston Crunelle (the Professor at the Paris Conservatoire and a contemporary of Marcel Moyse and the teacher of many modern flutists, including James Galway), were both written in 1943. The Prokofiev Sonata is also a HUGE undertaking and extremely challenging. Any piece studied and played well (the right "style", etc.) will be a challenge for you.

you might want to play the Burton Sonatina. It`s a great piece, one of my favorites. I actually like the Dutilleux too, it`s a very nice piece.

If you think Syrinx is boring and you`d mastered Poulenc in a week, I am amazed.
Or it could be that you didn`t actually capture the essence of either. Syrinx is only as boring as you make it.

Wow! Miranda, you sound like a true virtuoso. Syrinx is one of the most beautiful pieces. I have never heard it as being described as boring. I guess there is a first time for everything. I suppose it could be really boring if one was to play it without any expression or feeling.

syrinx was too "boring" as i said technically. to put in passion, well... thats another story. I want something that will make me look at the paper and want to smack myself for even picking it up.
oh, and in case you were wondering "wait... she mastered poulenc??? What about that high F in Cantilena thats marked ppp???" When I look at a piece of music, I envision, most of the time, something different than the composer and/or arranger did, so i alter it a bit and put more feeling into it.

I wouldn`t go for a piece that is too difficult for your playing ability. It is better to play something very nicely that is in your ability range than to try something too advanced and not have it clean sounding. It sounds like you might be getting ahead of your self a bit.

Well personally I believe that you should stay as true to the music as possible. The composer wrote it the way they did for a reason. I mean embellishing and changing are two completly different things entirely.
I dont think you should go for a piece that is going to be too hard because challenges are good. Sometimes just playing something at your level is better. Just because it is easy doesnt mean it cant be beautiful.

and im sorry if i sound rude. honestly, i do... but can you not tell im not a so-called "advanced player"? I could be like... extremely good or something. I`m not a 13 year old...

Your entitle to you own opinion. Im not stopping you.
Good for you for being good BUT that doesnt mean that you rub it in and let it go to your head. And everyone has their own issues to deal with so even if you think that justifies your rudeness it doesnt.
