The brand, and the age of the flute doesn`t actually play a huge factor in the decision you make when buying a flute. It`s more how comfortable the flute is to you, you know when you`ve found the right flute when you play it. The age, I suppose applies to wooden instruments more than nickel/silver, because you have to work in the wood, but of course, there are some very well made older flutes. As for brands, I find that Buffet, and Yamaha seem to have a very good tone to them. Price ranges of course vary from place to place, and depends on the model you seek. I may not be the most experienced on flute, having played 5 years on and off since playing oboe for 3 years, and trombone for 2 took up some time. But I just took my grade 6 conservatory exam, and taken lessons for the last 3 months. I have a Blessing B103 flute, gotten for $650 CAD, it`s a silverplated, openhole flute.

LOOK FOR DEALS!!! My best friend got a $1000 flute for about $150! I am about to get a $1500 flute for $300. My teacher finds them for us I am not sure where but don`t over spend on a flute. Get a nice one that will last a long time.

its called woodwindbrasswind. my teacher suggested the place and she rules. so tell your freinds. they sell any intrument even down to recorders and up to sousophone (which is a merching band tuba that curls around your body)

Some instruments do sound way better with time (e.g violins). As far as I know flutes sound the same but as they`re prone to bumps, scratches and break easily you are more likely to buy a new flute before you think about buying a new violin!!!!!

I have a YAMAHA flute (F100SI)it costs about $1200 NZ which is about $600 US. I`ve had it for 6 years and it`s pretty good though I`m thinking of getting a better one soon as I want to persue flute further at University. But the flute I have is fine (has lasted me right through highschool)

Wasn`t I right or what?A new and an old flute are the same, exept, old flutes are probably better. And ofcourse if you beaten it up, it changes the sound.. I can`t for band tomorrow, We`re playin` "Louie,Louie."

Really??? We are playing Louie Louie in concert on the 4th. We are also playing Washing Lee Swing, We Will Rock You, Go Fight Win, Over The Rainbow, If I Only Had A Brain, and Happy Birthday.

Cool! what grade are you in? I`m in 7th. We already learned Happy Birthday in 6th grade. At my concert, we only play like 3 songs. We played "Go Fight Win" and "Louie,Louie" at our Pep Rally. So, we might not play it at our concert.

Hiya. I don`t know what kind of standard you are or anything but to be honest, I don`t really understand all this hype about beginner/pro flutes, I`ve managed to get up to grade 7 (I`m British by the way) on a standard student flute and I feel very comfortable with it. I think this transition to an open hole flute when you get into "band?" is a US thing because I know a lot of musicians round here (very good ones) who don`t play open hole flutes. Go for something that suits you.. you can get them for as little as £75 on www.musicalinstrumentsales.co.uk (there`s american instruments on there too).
