I think that it totally depends what flute you have. I`m 13, and my flute I got 2 years ago cost about £2500, but it`s totally worth it. It`s a Muramatsu. I`m DIP ABRSM standard, so I`m going to upgrade head joint, but I don`t know HOW good you are, so I wouldn`t be able to say. Have you considered just updating the head joint? It works a treat!
Good luck!

Sorry, I forgot to add- my flute is open-holed. I would def go 4 openholed but you have so much more potential - you can get plugs so its just like a closedholes uintil u get used 2 it. i liv in uk so dont kno wot america `grades` r but im yr 9 (age 13)
but in the end, it`s totally up to you

There have been HUGE improvbements to volume/tone/response by improvements in head design in the last few years.

A flute with a head that is a few decades old is not pathetic by today`s standards.

Hey well my flute cost about 700 dollars. It stinks that your dad won`t buy you one but raising the money ourself is cool.Well you could look in the newspaper to see if anyone is selling a good flute for cheap.

I paid $500 for an intermediate and it was a special discount and a monthly payment plan just for students so see if any local music stores will do that with students or your director is involved with some discount mail in catalog. My current flute was $2,200. I think I probably paid a bit much but I LOVE it but an intermediate would probably be great and if you go even further the prices go higher. I think my teacher`s was $6,000 and many can cost lots more.

Just wait till you get into the high end professional ones! My husband was not too happy with the Powell that I just spent $1000.00 for! But hey, it`s my money, right! And here I thought it was crazy when I bought my first solid silver one.

Yep, 10 thousand. That is how much a handmade Powell will run you. If you say I am getting ripped off, then you obviously have never played one then because they are worth every penny.
