Hi. I am picking up flute playing again after 10 years of absence. My problem is that I have a regular daytime job that comes with a very demanding schedule. The only time that I can practice is either 5AM or 10pm. I live in condo and my neighbor has complained about my 'noise' twice to the management. So guys would you know of any device that will silence my flute or at least make it produce a soft sound to the ear?

Your very demanding schedule must have some breaks. Find a room wehre you can practise at work during breaks.
Fins a school or church or other building that is not used at night, and make arrangements with the manager to use it at 10 pm or 5am. Perhaps a small fee will be required.

Thank you Micron. I think that is a good idea. However, I might just buy a music stand with battery-operated light and find a place outdoor where I can practice, such as poolside or playground. I live in Singapore and there is no much places that can accomodate that kind of arrangement. I am a trainee stock trader and playing flute is my only outlet of stress. Thanks again

When I lived in an apartment, I often practiced while sitting in my car (a little Mazda GLC).
Good luck! I think you've chosen a good stress reliever.

as I live in new york city, this problem has arisen on a few occasions, generally I would practice when I knew they were not at home or find a friendly church where I would offer to play for free once a month or so in exchange for the use of the space

Or play in the middle of a park or school grounds, if you feel safe, which is possibly the case in Singapore. How about a business or office premise, with the offer of an occasional performance for staff. Is a local university open at night? Some non-nuisance (store?) room of a hospital?

Anyway it is almost always safe to practice in parks and other places like playgrounds, etc. even at night time. I now practice at the public place where old people exercise tai-chi at night and I am surprised to find out that they actually don't mind the disturbances. Thanks for your suggestions.

You can practice at home by not blowing very much air into the flute. You will get an airy sound and you can make out the notes that are being played. I don't get home from work untill 11:00 and I live with 3 other people. No one has ever complained.
