Angie,
I could not identify exactly the cut of that Headjoint, but seems to me like a "High Wave" type, isn't it?

i think so zevang, i don't know if it's a high wave or a gold wing, or if high wave and gold wing are the same head but given two different names, have you tried one ???

What is a gold wing? One of my friends has a head joint like that, but I haven't tried it.

That is a high wave lip plate sometimes called a wing lip plate.
They are very responsive but somewhat colorless. Meaning it is difficult to get a wide range of colors (tones) from this type of head since it focuses the air for you a bit.
The old Prima Sankyos made these quite popular but individual makers have made them and I've also seen some from miyazawa and others...

I've never tried it, unfortunately.
Today I was at a technician's shop, and he showed me his bass flute. It once had a high wave, but he told me he took it off and gave a silver coat to the lip plate, so now it's flat.
I have not seen anyone playing with one of those high wave lately. Seems to me that they are a little out-of-date.
Anyway, if you try it and like the results, that's what is important :-)
good luck!

They never much worked for me. I feel the same as Joe, it was hard to get different tones and colors. Maybe it was just the brand I tried though? They are supposed to help and make it easier for one to play, but I found them to be more restricting then anything. Good luck with it Ange!

If you don't mind me asking Lera, which one did you choose to put on your flute?

I played with Muramatsu's plain and high wave headjoints and I found I liked the plain design better than the high wave. I though that the highwave I tried at the time was duller and not capable of as much volume, but it could have also been that particular headjoint itself.
Perhaps there are highwaves that have design good enough that some could have more color capability than a plain head as there are certainly some rather plain heads that just suck all around when compared to others.

i find all your comments really interesting, so far andrew has sent me 2 heads, 1 solid silver with 9ct gold riser and 1 solid silver with 14ct gold riser and lip plate. I am fairly much blown away by the difference between the two already, i didn't think a solid gold lip plate would make that much difference to the tone, but it does !!! so i'm waiting for the high wave, and another head, i can't remember what he said about the 4th head now so i'll have to wait, but i'll let you all know - and which one i choose.
