I'm sorry if I come across as a jerk because of this, but it's starting to get annoying having all of these ancient threads brought up again. I'd just like to ask all of you that keep posting to long dead threads to reconsider before doing so in the future. If some sort of a resolution had not been reached on them, they would have some recent responses still debating the subject (and thus be somewhere near the top of the list), rather than passing into the past. Besides, the vast majority of the people who posted to those threads are no longer on this forum, and while I understand that some of you are trying to help answer their questions, the chances that they will ever read your response are extremely low. Please, don't bring up long-since cold threads!

Chris, I share your fustration. I think what is happening a lot is that these people that are posting on these year old threads are doing a google search for something and it comes up, so then they post in it wihout looking at the date. They still have to register, so you would think then they would see this, but I guess not.

Could be...I hoped perhaps posting this thread would help clear it up a bit, and perhaps it will....We'll just have to see what happens.

I don't know. I kind of liked the "Majorette v. Flute" topic

Seriously though, I can see where people would want to get a fresh opinion or more clarificaton of an answer they found in an old topic. They then have to choice of "re-awakening" the old topic, or starting a new one. If you use the old one, at least you don't start from scratch with the old answers, or get flamed for asking a question that was asked before.

I do agree that the "highest note" thread, should have remained dead...

In the end it all comes down to common sense.

Oh, and it's F# of course

<Added>

"the choice" of course, not "to choice". I'm sorry, it's Monday morning...

A good point Leporello, and one that I had not fully considered. Yes, a good dose of common sense is quite useful in situations like these. Unfortunately, not everyone seems to have a supply of common sense at hand. And after reading some of the posts from the "old days," I'm not sure that any of the original answers would really merit reviving.

I personally see no particular need for it. Sure it's a little annoying to have these old threads brought up, but part of what I enjoy here is the community of people of all different ages, experiences, etc. coexisting, and fragmenting the forum into these "groups" doesn't seem like the way to deal with it to me. The old threads certainly can be a nuisance, but don't really interrupt the forum a great deal. I would rather see people apply a little bit of common sense than have the forum broken into groups (even if the forum as a whole did exist aside from the groups).

I feel the same as flutist06. I like the group as a whole.

I agree, it's fun the way it is. What happened to the "number of posts" thing by the way?

I would like to ask you all, mostly the list owner, if it wouldn't be better to show the messages from the most recent to the oldest.
It would help to avoid us having to click all the time in the last page.
I don't know if it's possible, but it would make it more confortable.

Perhaps instead of shutting people down in to more specific groups, there is a possibility that Admin could "lock" old threads after they are unanswered for some time. Obviously, I am unsure of the set up behind your forums, but maybe a default setting like no responses for 30 days would lock a thread? That way if people want to read the old stuff they can, and if they want to start a new topic about it they are able to do so?

<Added>

It might also be nice to make a "Sticky" note at the top of the thread so new users who join know the guidelines of the forums.
