Can someone post a recording or a video of someone playing the flute from the first to the third octave? I still don't have a teacher and I just want to know how each note sounds.

Thanks in advance!

You know what, I was using smart music to record and I just cancelled my membership to it yesterday. I will see if I might be able to find a free recording thing on line so I can do it for you. Sorry about that.

Angie, I know you have great recording software, could you record yourself and pass it along?

Kara,I use Audacity from the sourceforge.net:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=6235

It is free and ańso available from other download sites.

To make a mp3 from the file Audacity produces, you just have to add a dynamic library (just a piece of SW with a ".dll" extension), also free and widely available. Audacity will warn you that it needs this .dll the first time you try to export the file to a mp3 format.

You can google the full name it gives you, download it and finally install the .dll in the same directory where Audacity is and you are ready to export to mp3.

Sorry I cannot provide the name of the .dll; I did it just once and did not note the name. Also, my Audacity no longer asks for the .dll so I cannot repeat the process....

OOPS
ańso = also

OK, I google it myself. the dll required is: lame_enc.dll

Different sites where you can download it form are:

Kenongab, I have this idea:

I could prepare a mp3 file with the sound of a synthesized flute (close to the real one) from low B to high C (3rd octave)or higher. It could be a chromatic scale made with 1/4s, for example. I could make two versions, with and without slurs.

This could be quickly and easily done (just take a few minutes), but I am not sure whether this is what you want.

Note that:

- A synthesized instrument sounds perfectly in tune with A=440 though this value may be changed (but I still have to see how to do it). It can help you to play in tune the full instrument range, but it is somewhat away from reality.

- The sound I get is a close approach, but of course it is not the real instrument with a good performer. If you just want to learn the differences between the octaves it should be acceptable. But if your concern is how to get a good sound, then it has no value..

Let me know if my proposal would be helpful.

OK, I have sent you the scales plus a pdf "score".

Please notice:

- Pitch is for A=440. It could be low for a modern flute and you will have to take out the headjoint for (maybe) 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch from the full "in" position.

The idea is that you try to play in tune. If you can't, then I could modify the scale for A=442, but I still have to learn how to do it with the SW I use (sorry).

- The notes are quarters, with tempo equal to 60 (that is, you have to play a note each second). They are probably too long for your breathing if you are completely new to the flute, particularly in the slurred groups (I made them 4 notes long each).

But longer notes help to tune correctly (or at least notice you are not in tune) and to improve the sound you get. If your breath is short at the beginning, you will have to breath as often as you need; I put breathing signs each four notes, normally it should be OK, but I do not know for sure in your case.

- It is "recorded" with a synthesized flute, so the sound is only approximative to an actual, well played flute.

- I decided to include the low B, in case you have a B foot. If you do not, just discard the first 1/2 note both in slurred and not slurred scales.

- I only made the ascending part; descending parts could be a little more difficult, particularly for the fingering of the third octave.

- You absolutely need a fingering chart. I remember seeing one at the Yamaha site, have a check there if you do not have one already.

- If you decide to undertake the learning of this wonderful instrument, I suggest you get a teacher, at least for the initial basics. Otherwise it may prove to be quite difficult, this instrument requiring good mouth, lips and body positions from the very beginning. If you advance with a wrong technique it will be harder later to correct them.

Good luck!
