Well, I guess it depends on the person. I think that even if dents and scratches don't matter, it still looks ugly.

Do you mean Lafin? Have you had a chance to try one? I have never been so lucky yet. Galway told me I could try his at the last concert I saw him, but I didn't take him up on it. I would be paranoid that I would drop it or something. eek!

I am breaking out the digital camera tonight and taking a picture of my head joint...have you ever noticed the work "head" and "joint" "refer" to the same topic?

(Yes, I do have a life time subscription to High Times!)

(if you believe any of this, you really don't know me!)

Now to think of it, you don't really know me....and I have referenced pot, marijuana a few times...hmmmmmm....I got you all wondering now!

in my 30+ years of playing, I have seen many headjoints come and go, and many stick around, if you want a low resistant, free blowing headjoint, they are still out there, Drelinger is one of the popular ones in this category, but if you opt for this, you will get a sound with less nuance, the color will be constant, which is good if you like the edginess...

but I now know why most seasoned pros opt for a head with some resistance, one has to work harder, but the variety of colors is more than the rainbow, maybe this is why many of the pros I know here in NYC play on old instruments with the original headjoints...

I know this has like, nothing to do with anything, but, I hate gold flutes like Galways. Do silver flutes sound different?? Silver is more traditional on flute, and I think it looks better, but would it sound good if you put a gold headjoint on a silver flute?

first, define "better", I have a gold headjoint on a silver flute...I like the feel and sound of it, but if you don't, then so what...most people like it...its the player anyway, not the flute..

well not strictly true, different metals offer certain different acoustical advantages/disadvantages!! Claire it really depends on the make and the density, i tried a gold powell and it was beautiful for say the soft parts in prokofiev sonata etc but for say franck or prok 4th movement etc it wasnt as good as a silver flute. Certain professionals play on flutes that make it more of a challenge to make things more interesting...to create more of a challenge!

materials are dodgy in the sense that it is the player, Galway would sound like Galway no matter what he played on, he has a signature sound, I will say that GOld has an incredible feel to it, especially in regards to breathing..

to a certain degree! however the material can in certain cases help take you to a different level! like silver can help with darkness but that does not mean its the only material that can, galway plays well on gold, andrew nicholson also!

Hmm.. I am not sure if I totally agree on that. I think it is more in the design of the flute taking you to a differnt level. Well that and practice!
