Well.. i *highly* doubt i'll be able to get the Miyazawa 202 or 402 as they are $$$$$ lol. If I did get them, I'd want the C# trill and D# roller, and I sounded best of the M5 headjoint with the 14k riser (didn't get to try it without the gold riser though) and then thats $3,945 for the 202.. and my moms limit was $2,300 max (I'd feel bad making her pay that much as I play violin too and have a $1,500 violin..) Then also would just routine matienence be more expensive on Miyazawas?
I REALLY REALLY like how easy the Miyzawas are to play, and I like their mechanism much more than the Yamaha 574, (smoother, and i feel a little faster) although I had a very nice sound with the Yamaha, more than the Miyzawa, although my teacher prefers a dark sound over bright and the Miyzawa is very bright.
I don't know what I should do Does it untimately come down to what *you* want??

Yes, in the end, it's all about what YOU want/need. Your teacher may prefer a dark sound, but that's your teacher's preference. You don't necessarily have to agree, though there is a reason that they're the teacher and you're the pupil. The Miyazawa won't cost any more for maintainance than a different brand at a similar level. It sounds like you need to discuss your feelings with your teacher and your mom, and decide what the best decision is, taking into account cost, your musical needs, and any other important points you can come up with.

i dont agree with parents setting a "limit" on an instrument, unless they truly cannot afford to pay any more for it, which can also be helped since there are many financing options nowadays. when i was upgrading my flute in high school, my parents set a price range of no more than $2500, considering there were many flutes in that range. i ended up buying a $7000 flute. OBVIOUSLY that was more than their budget, but they could afford the extra money. many parents arent musicians themselves and do not understand the value of a good instrument that fits their kid so they figure its much like investing in a sofa; make sure it looks good, but dont spend a lot of money on it because its not that important and you'll want to replace it in a couple of years(at least thats how my mother viewed it). you need to try to make your mom understand that you didnt pick out the more expensive flute just because it was more expensive, but because you play better on it. try to get your teacher on board with you (although he/she should be more supportive of a flute with a different sound than what they prefer) and convince your mom that the extra $500 will be worth it.

oops, $1500, not $500

I agree that in an ideal world there would be no limits on what we buy as flutists, but the fact is that there are, and we have to work within those constraints. Besides, it doesn't make much sense for a parent to shop for an $8000 flute if their child is barely at the "intermediate" level. It would be great if Arabians could get a $4000 flute, much less a $7000 flute, but not everyone is so fortunate as to have parents who can afford such a large investment, or who feel that its necessary. We don't know what reasons Arabian's mom has for setting the budget she did, but there is probably a logical basis for it. Have that talk I mentioned with your mom and teacher and see what you can work out, Arabians. Your mother may not understand your musical needs, in which case you may be able to change her mind, but if she's constricted by budget or some other reasonable factor, I think it's important that you respect that and find the best possible compromise for your particular situation.

My mom *could* afford it, and she played flute herself so she does know that a good instrument is important.. but really any new flute would probably be better than the flute ive always used (its her old flute.. its actually not *terrible* but all of them i've tried are much better :P)
If she could not afford it, we wouldn't even be going to TRY the 202 and 402.. lol. Maybe if i sound AMAZING on one of those it would work.. I dunno :P

maybe you could comprimise a little like getting the flute you can play then get the better head joint, next month, or try the head joint you like on your current flute and get the new othr parts next month, or convince your mum it would be worth paying the extra money
