Hi friends,
I just wanted to take this opportunity to tell you about a very gifted engraver. His name is Brian Powely and he does phenominal work! I just received my headjont and crown back from him today and you are welcome to view pictures of his art by viewing my profile page. I just can't stop looking at it. It is so intricate. My camera was not able to pick up the true beauty of it. It sparkles like crazy in person. I know not everyone prefers engraving on the lip plate and I respect that, but please no negative comments.

Well, I have to step out of line Kara and say something 'negative'. That art work is NOT at all Not beautiful. It seems to have a level of depth that is artistic than the average engraving attempts.
Oh I know... those flutes are just gorgeous! Some of these private flute makers make the most gorgeous flutes! David Williams comes to mind. I have never seen one in person, but I have always wanted to.
I agree that Lunn flutes are fantastic to look at, but I was not impressed by how the one I tried played. The response was slow, the tone dull, and the mechanism just decent. Personally, I agree that independent makers create some beautiful instruments, but I would prefer a Williams, or an Emanuel to a Lunn any day.
Anyway, congratulations, Kara! That lip plate is gorgeous! Once I've run out of other things to buy, I want to have my lip plate and keys engraved...Mostly as an aesthetic thing, but I also like the feel of an engraved lip. How long did he have to have your headjoint to get all of that done?

He did it the next day I shipped it to him and worked all night on it. He did tell me that this is not the normal turn around time. He just wanted to wrap loose ends up as he said he was leaving out of town soon. If you do have your flute engraved, I can't recommend him enough! He was so nice to talk to over the phone too. He is a genuine one of a kind person.
This is a Goosman. I took about 5 years and did a LOT of headjoint testing and waited to find the right one before spending the money on a solid gold lip and having it engraved to the way I wanted it. Oh and did I mention save? lol!! I would like to get my keys engraved also the next time I need the pads changed, though that probably won't be for another five years. I better start saving now! I am not positive about this though, as I most likely will pass this flute down to my niece, daughter or son later in life.
