my little sister (who also plays flute) recently received a flute for her birthday (a miyazawa classic... im about to steal it) but as it was used, the original case and cover was massacred by the sellers dog so insted of me buying her that ipod she asked for, she asked for a new flute case... a wooden one. ive shopped around online and have had no luck in finding one except for leather covered ones, which she doesnt want. i saw that pearl has wooden cases on their website in their accessories link, but then i run into the problem of where would i obtain one of these and what if the flute doesnt fit?

does anyone have any suggestions on where i could find a wooden flute case?

Well, you have several options. You can buy wooden cases (actually, most good quality French style cases are wooden with a layer of leather) from a flute maker, but as you noted, you run the risk of having it be a poor fit for any other flute. The best option (assuming money isn't an issue) would be a custom made case. There are several case makers who will build a case to your specs, so that's certainly a possibility check out this link:

Personally, I don't think that a custom case is particularly necessary (particularly from a financial standpoint) unless you'll be carrying a relatively large and odd combination of instruments, so if it were me, I would see if you couldn't convince your sister that a leather covered case is just as good as a hardwood case. You'll find leather covered French style cases much more easily (and probably more cheaply!).

You can get them off of ebay. Here is one of the ads..

I purchased one but relined it with nicer velvet because the lining that comes in it has a funny smell to it. I also stripped mine of the original varnish that was on it. You can view pictures of mine here... (Scroll down to the middle of the page)

Other than that, I would see if you can just order one from the Miyazawa co.

ussally if you get a case for a flute with the c foot it will fit most flutes with the c foot, same with a case with a b foot, so you could get a woodern one like kara linked to or, you could go to the local music store with hr flute and get her a leather one that will definatly fit

You may be able to fit the flute in there, but there are some variations in how long each section of a flute is amongst makers, which means a generic case probably won't hold the flute as snugly as it should and any options she may have could require additional space.

My flute case is just a simple padded one(leather outside with handles) but plastic inside. I gutted it and put in foam, which i cut to fit it perfectly.(same as a typical camera case, where I got the idea from).

You can do this with a wooden box if you want and are handy with basic tools. I found that velvet/etc, unless it was from the manufacturer(and even then, sometimes), just didn't fit right and let the flute bounce around/move too much). Of course, get the softest non-reactive foam you can - the typical dark grey stuff they use for cameras and such is far too hard. It needs to deform just from the weight of the flute, which is a few ounces of pressure.

I suppose a chunk of soft memory foam would work well, though that would likely require cannibalizing a pillow or something. (evil grin)
