I am not sure if that is really a good idea. People will get their feeling hurt in the process as I am not sure it would be used as intended. If for some reason someone does not like another member of the forum then they can put a negative on anything they post even if it is beneficial to the rest of the forum members. That is where I think that feelings can get hurt. Just my two cents...

Yes, but the members can still see when they have a negative which could upset someone. On the other hand, if enough people did use is when needed, I can see that it would help. It has its pros and cons I guess.

We need to stop worrying about our personal reputations and let our words speak for themselves. If people feel that we have written something idiotic, then they will have to vote with a "thumbs down".
Only through listening to what our peers have to say can we truly learn and better ourselves.
Are we really afraid of finding out that we aren't as smart as we thought we were?

I don't really think its about that. I personally couldn't care what anyone has to say about me, because I don't define myself by what other people think of me. I really just think its a way for the forum to self-moderate.

Okay, I change my mind. It looks like this voting this will come in handy after what was just posted.

See, you like it now that you can gang up on people who offer something valuable to the forum so you can keep the level here to near-rock-bottom.
It's a good thing!

but the real question is can you vote multiple times on one post? if so, this could cause a "negativity war" with some of the more, well, valued members of this forum and those who have made a bad name for themselves...
we shall see, now wont we?

Hmm.. I just tried putting a positive twice on a post and it would only vote once, so I don't think you can vote several times.

What??? So why did Bilbo and Brandy's post get a negative? I don't think is going to work to well after all.

In my humble opinion, the thumbs down should only be used when one or more of the following is true:
a) The post is offensive or rude (and you should also click the "Report this post" button)
b) The post does not relate to flute playing or forum-related issues
c) You disagree with the content of a post
IMHO, the thumbs down should not be used only because you don't like the person who wrote the post.
If you agree with me, please give me a thumbs up. Otherwise, thumbs down. That will help me decide whether I want to continue participating in this forum.

Which posts by Bilbo or Brandy received a negative? I don't see them. Did you vote thumbs up to change it back to zero?
If that's the case, then I think the voting system is working.
