Oh, I really have a good feeling too. I hope that it comes true. They could be great...or they could be crap. We know nothing about the body. Please let me know anything. I don't think any of the stores near me are getting them in. I have called around...you would think Atlanta would be a great flute market...oh well. UPDATE PLEASE!!!

I talked to a rep at flute world the other day and she said that she tried one of the first ones made and said they were fantastic. She was also blown away by the Brio. Please, do let us know what you think. Have fun!

Yes, I meant the one's by Gemeinhardt. She particularly loved the rose gold plated model. I would really like to try them out myself. Another friend of mine that deals in flutes says they are nice, but she says the Azumis still blow them away.

When I go to buy my niece an new flute, I will be able to try some along with her. that probably won't be until next year though..

I tried the Brio a while ago...I didn't really care for it. But I was also with a student who was looking for a college flute, so we were trying higher end instruments. I figured it would be good, since it has the Sheridan head.

Did you ever go try the Avanti? I am still wondering what they are like and none of the dealers around me seem to have them.

It sounds to me as though Avanti is Conn-Selmer's way of competing with Gemeinhardt's Brio!, Lyric, Haynes' Amadeus, Azumi, and any/all of the other flutes with "handmade" headjoints on a cheaper body and footjoint to cut down costs.

Theoretically it all makes sense-- put a professional quality headjoint on an intermediate-ish body and footjoint, usually with open hole keys, and voila! cheaper flute with a decent headjoint. The thing that many people don't quite grasp, however, is the fact that just because a flute has a good headjoint doesn't make the complete flute something worth owning.

A close friend of mine had tried the Brio! by Gemeinhardt (currently being endorsed by Greg Patillo, the beatboxer guy) and said it was absolute junk and that the headjoint didn't seem to make much of a difference (to each their own in the headjoint category!) and that the keys seemed cheaply made with very light spring tension which didn't add to the appeal. When she'd written to express her remorse of the free Brio! trial, she stated how she'd felt regarding the overall 'feel' of the flute, and they told her that the reason for the cheap-feeling keys was due to the gold springs. I'm ending the Brio! input here as that's another category in itself! Anyhow, my theory is good headjoint = a good thing however junky body and foot does NOT = good flute.

Until I'm proven wrong, I shall continue this theory as I am fairly certain that others have had this same experience. Proven fact, though, that any decent headjoint can make even a cheap $20 falling-apart Bundy sound halfway (if not more) decent. Pardon my somewhat lengthy post (my 2nd since joining today) + Happy Holidays! -Suzie

Oh, I totally agree that the Brio's mechanism didn't feel good. I also, personally don't like the Haynes Amadeus. I do...and I know several people on this forum will shoot back critism about this one...I do like the Powell Sonare. I have several students with them and they sound great and only one of my students had some mechanism problems...leaks. So, yes, the headjoint cannot cover up crappy mechanism...however, from what I have read, the goal is to have mechanism competitive with the Yamaha 300/400 series and other flutes in that price range. If this Avanti has decent mechanism and a great head...well, we may have a great flute at a great price for students stepping up. I know the Powell Sonare was recently on a back order because of changing production location and still having lots of orders...I just don't think everyone thinks they are horrible if there are that many people wanting them
The Avanti could be horrible...I just want some opinions of how that flute actually plays because none of the dealers near me are getting it.
