Although I'm a high school junior, I'm already looking into college auditions. (I want to be a music teacher, so i want to major in music education).
I'm thinking for one of them be "Carmen Fantasy" - Borne...is this a good idea?
Also .. I'm not really sure of a contrasting piece or two...any ideas would be helpful to tell my second semester teacher (who's not American ... and I don't know if she knows much about the American audition process).
I was thinking about those, too ... but I was afraid some of those are 'too overdone'... i mean, i know everyone has their own interpreation but it's the same pieces usually...
To me, playing Baroque music really well shows a lot about a persons musical ability. Not only is there musicality...but also knowing proper articulations and dynamics...if you get an urtext edition, you don't have much to work with. And, I know most of the edited versions out there I hate! Some of them have the stupidist articulations! Also, knowing proper ornamentations...etc. I think Baroque music requires a lot of knowledged and research to be played well.
If you're worried about overdone, stay away from Chaminade lol!
I help my university with auditions, so I always hear what everyone plays. There are enough Bach sonatas to choose from and there's a heck of alot of Telemann to choose from. There only thing I hear duplicated is usually Mozart concerto in G, but the piece offers so much it's hard to tire of it. And of course I hear the Chaminade.
It's wonderful you're thinking this far in advance! Preparation is key to success.
How exciting! Keep us updated and let us know which ones you finally decide on. I don't know anything about the process but next year I'll be looking into colleges and hopefully submitting auditions as well.
for my audition for college i played mozart in g (required piece), sonatine by dutilleux, trockne blumen by schubert, and suite in a minor by telemann. of course there were a few excerpts and scales as well.
