Just found this and thought I'd share.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Flute-Gems-c-Gothic-Skull-4-Flute_W0QQitemZ120209015026QQihZ002QQcategoryZ10183QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I feel that if I were to see someone with such a thing on their flute, I'll weasel my way over and unhook all of their needle springs! I know a girl that did that to a piccoloist (during my high school years) and she blamed me! Tsk-tsk! =) (Wasn't me though!)

Ah, duct tape! Can't say I've EVER seen it on a flute (thankfully!) but who WOULDN'T want a little bit of disposable platinum strips on their flute? Adds to the tonal response I'll bet as it adds a little extra 'weight' to the tubing. Lol!

Oh come on guys. Not everyone is an elite flutist.

A lot of people in Elementry and High School are in the band for social reasons.

At least the thing is on elastic and will not permanently damage the flute or the sound of the flute.

I think it is a creative and artistic person who made that little doo dad and they are not destined to be a flute player. Maybe they will be the next Van Gogh.

Let people have a little fun.

At least they aren't trying to put it on your flute!

Have a good one.

Eh, yes and no. I picked up flute when I was 10 and got stuck in beginning band TWICE, mind you, as there was no advanced band for 6th graders. I still NEVER put things on my flute although I did play it in the pool once when I was 10 (didn't get it wet or anything, just a demon in my head urging me to try it! lol) and I recall a time during middle school when everyone else was getting new flutes and I didn't want to be stuck with my vintage Gemeinhardt M2 so I bent the trill keys lol. I'm not even sure WHY my father felt the need to keep sending it off to be repaired. I ended up giving it to this boy I was babysitting (he's about 18 or so now) since he wanted to play the flute but, even then, there wasn't a ding nor heavy scratch on the flute since I, moderately, took care of it lol. Also, it got stepped on once as well. I was practicing, stuck it underneath the couch *lol* assembled and my father's ex-wife's youngest daughter somehow stepped on it and bent the thumb B key lol. Ah joys of flutes. *goes crazy*

Also-- yes, it's good that the 'things' are on elastic however I'm wondering if they'd scratch and/or if there's a metal band attaching the pieces of elastic together. Either way I think it's a bad idea. For my 'bling' in around 6th/7th grade, I kept Herkimer "diamonds" (quartz) in my crown to add to the tonal depth, I'm sure. I liked how it made a maraca sound lol!

Sounds like you went a little extreme with the flute at times.

I would let my kid put an elastic doo dad on her flute.

I wouldn't let her put paint, tape or anything else that could seriously hurt the flute.

Not everyone loves there flute the same way. The person that made that probably loves there flute and wants to give it a little bling.

I wouldn't do it. But then again, I am an old lady.

I can appreciate the creativity. That person is an artist.

i used to wrap blue electrical tape around my tenon and headjoint back when i wasin marching band. it had a purpose: to keep the headjoint from flying out.

at least royal blue was one of our school colors...

Oh gosh! LOL! You just reminded me of this girl at one of the somewhat-local high schools. She marched piccolo (a school-owned 4W, wtf?!) and was telling me (when I was in high school) about how she kept a piece of grass wedged between the tenon and barrel (basically headjoint and body) since the headjoint was loose. Last time I went to my high school to check on a few instruments, the Selmer Paris low A (I believe) bari sax had some sort of nasty tape on the neck since the cork needed replacing. Also, for a short repair story, another somewhat-local school's clarinet player (we played bass clarinet together in all-county lol)was telling me about how he'd "fix" a leaking pad by putting surgical (white mesh) tape over the pad. I'd hate to be the one to fix these things! LOL! Well, just the tape-residued ones, really. Maybe I'll pay my high school a visit and *steals a Selmer Paris 37 bass clarinet* make a few adjustments in my free time. Not like I have anything better to do besides flute stuff lol. Ok, I'm rambling!

I see we share a Gemeinhardt M2 in our pasts...

I still have mine (i.e I studied on it until May last year and give her a cuddle now and then). It could be considered a vintage baby though she is at least 30 years old.

Haha, yes indeed, it appears that way! Weird thing is that they've retained their value. My M2 cost $150 in 1995 at the local flea market (guy plays flute there) and they still sell for about $150 in good condition. Weird how that works. Take care!

LOL I never attempted to do anything with my flute, but I think that was because I knew my mom wouldn't buy me another one. But I do remember when I begun, my teacher told to to practices before going bad.( I did, but I fell asleep on my flute, lol flute was ok the next day but my back wasn't.

I suppose you mean "going (to) bed" or was it actually going bad?

If I had to practise before going to bed I guess my neighbours would get me out of here with the police and the psychiatrist...

Well the skull kind of creeps me out, but I am not much into skulls I suppose. I have seen worse things I suppose. There are some pretty funny things on ebay. And even I get made fun of because of the gemstone crowns I make. Well, that was only two people, one was a mean crabby old man and the other one was our lovely troll, who is finally gone for good I hope.
