I am always looking for videos of child prodigies playing flute. There are a lot of very young pianists and violonists, but not many flutist because of some physical ability this instrument requires(as lengh of arms and fingers, breath, embouchure...).

I finally found this one:

She is 7 yo.

WOW!

She plays on a Powell Conservatory model. Those are not light flutes either!

Kara,

This is the exact same link I just gave. Did you mean to put an other one?

It would be interesting to track this 7yo flutist to see how/if she develops well. There are some signs of good technical ability in her but I think that the issues that she has playing this piece are primarily a consequence of her size and that a U shaped head could help but they'd not solve the breathing issues. Time will tell.

I have to say I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, she has fabulous technical skills and finger facility for a seven year old, though she struggles with breathing (no doubt her small size) and sometimes her tone suffers with it. Like Bilbo, I'd be very interested to watch her development. She looks natural and completely fearless up there.

Now here's the mixed feelings. I often wonder how much the children truly wanted to do something like that one their own, or how much the parents are pushing them (ex Mozart: trained monkey for his father to boost his ego and put food on the table). How many seven year olds..... I don't know.. I went to school with a few people who played in regionals and stuff, whose parents made them practice hours and hours a day. If they were bad, their punishment was to practice. Talent like this is a wonderful blessing, but only if it's naturally promoted and driven by the child, not the parent.

she is no doubt amazing, but I can't help wondering if the teacher should have her hold off playing a piece like that in public till she can actually do it.. but her poise is remarkable..I just don't see the rush to play a piece sloppily when she could play so many other pieces cleanly, wish the ability to breathe...

There was another 7 y/o girl on YouTube that's 10 or so now but her father recently deleted the account! The user name was 'lietzen' if any of you recall that one.

I agree with you Patrick. It also makes me wonder, agai, just how much she is being pushed. And who buys a seven year old a powell conservatory? I hope that poor girl doesn't have too much pressure on her; she was remarkably poised regardless.

she should have the lightest flute available, maybe even curved head flute, I have had a few very young gifted students, but I always wanted them to establish a better tone and intonation before tackling such a piece...

That's what I was wondering about! Why not a silver-plated muramatsu or something with, like you said, a curved headjoint? My powell conservatory is like a brick; I don't know how she handles it. Oh well.

Not nearly as impressive as the girl playing Carmen, but I thought this brother and sister videos are pretty good for their ages.

This boy is pretty good at 7

But his sister plays flight of the bumble bee at 8!

Also, my 5 year old wants to play the flute. I picked up a bundy for her to start with, but now see I need a Curved head joint. Im not loaded with cash right now, so is there someplace that might just sell the head joint ? I picked up the flute for $80. Its in great shape. And I still have to pay for lessons, plus my 7 year old is already in violin lessons. So it adds up quick. Im a single Dad with limited funds right now trying to make the best of things. So any advice and tips would be really appreciated.
