I need some help, from all you experienced music folks.

I have played flute for 8 years, or something and love it. About three years ago I got braces on, and can't recall how I adjusted, but I sounded pretty good. For the past three years I have known flute playing only with braces.

Last week, I got my braces off. Awesome right?! Well, yes it was, but now, I don't sound so hot. It is very frustrating because I have state and stuff and a lot of concerts and such. Oh, its a pain!

Anyway, I sound ok but its not beautiful. Any suggestions?

I went through something similar, however this was on clarinet. At first I sounded OK but not great. It took a few weeks but then I started sounding fine and in fact, started to sound better.

Giving yourself some time is probably all you need, especially considering you've previously been playing without braces. Long tones every day will help your embouchure "remember" how it needs to minutely set up the muscles. I think you'll be just fine :-) and just need some time adjusting. Be patient with yourself even though you have concerts etc. coming up. Nothing happens overnight and stressing out will probably just make it worse.

it is normal for this to happen, most of my students who have braces go through this, give your embouchure time to adjust..

I went through something similar, but I already had braces on when I started to learn how to play. I'd say you just need time to adjust. If I remember correctly (got my braces taken off 14 years ago so my memory is a little bit rusty) it took a few days before I started sounding "good" again. I don't remember doing anything special though for my flute playing, I think all I did was practice as usual.

Oh, thank you very much everyone!

I guess I am just fretting too much. Its only been about four days since I got them off...so, I'll give myself more time!

thanks a lot

Remember to go slowly though, don't rush it.

I like this saying:

If you do it slowly, you'll get there early

If you do it fast, you'll get there late

-Tibeten proverb
