Hello everyone,
I'll just say I'm new here, and I've just been thinking about purchasing a flute that fits my proficiency in the flute playing field. Um..I've played the flute for 8 years, and am currently working on a piece composed by Poulenc. And no I'm not going to be a pro flautist.
Ya I 'm just curious about the average price for an open-holed flute. Thanks go to any future responders

Well, the price for an open hole flute all depends upon what level you want. The starting price for a Yamaha/Gemeinhardt/Jupiter/Pearl/Trevor James open hole flute, all silver w/silver plated keys, is around $1500. This is an intermediate flute, which probably won't last you through college if you are at the level where you can play the Poulenc Sonata.

The next step up is a pre-professional flute. These brands are usually the same as those of the intermediate flutes; for example, Trevor James offers models of pre-professional flutes which are superb flutes to any standard, espially if you are not planning to be a music major or go to conservatory. These flutes range from $2000-$5000.

The last step of flute is the professional flute, made entirely of silver with solid silver keys and mechanism. Professional flutes also have the option of gold risers, gold mouthpieces, or even a solid gold flute. These can range from $5000-over $30,000, depending on the material the flute is made from and if it is handmade or factory-made. Considering you aren't planning to go into music, though, I wouldn't reccommend this type of flute, for it is a large investment that isn't worth it unless you are really serious.

But in the end, try out flutes in your price range, and whichever fits you best, go with it! If you have any of these levels of flutes, the flute will give you room to grow as a musician and flutist; it is merely the extent on which you are planning to grow and study music that should decide the level of flute you choose. I just recently bought a flute for myself, a handmade Haynes, and absolutely love it, but I chose it because it fit me and my personality and can support my growth as a flutist; that's what you should be looking for.

Happy flute shopping!!! i hope this helped =)

Try before you buy. You may be suprised what you like. Just pick up the flute and play, don't look at the brand or price, but don't have anything way too expensive in the lineup

Thank you everyone for responding to my post. Ya I bet choosing blindfoldedly will give lead me to a wonderful flute eventually, but price is something I really have to keep in mind. Ya, so based on what laflute. said, an intermediate flute sounds like my type I would say my bottom line is around $1,000
ya...~~ the reason I'm in such a hurry to buy a new flute is because my dear old Yamaha close hole flute got stolen :'( , and the chance of finding it is growing thin everyday. Oh well:P but i'll soon have a new bff, and that's something I'm really looking forward to
