"You can name drummers, trumpet players, guitarists, saxophonists, etc. and other people who aren't in band will have heard of most of them. Go up to someone and name flute players and they won't have heard of one of them.

Flutes aren't the best. I am in no way saying my instrument is the best, I am just saying that in Marching Band & Pep Band flutes are of little importance, in Concert Band they normally carry melodies that other people are playing as well and/or supporting roles. They have very little broadness in your playing capabilities. You only hear them in the same type of pieces. Lack of versatility=Not the best.

Go ahead and flame me for pointing out facts."

Well, I won't flame you but I totally disagree. You need all the instruments. And flute not being versatile? It's used in many peices and has beautiful melodies at times. NOt to mention in band peices many flute solos all differnt styles. I honestly could not name other famous music soloists but various rockstars like slash on guitar ect. Ok maybe you don't see flute in a lot of rock but there are so many other avenues that people use flute like for bands, church, and YES you need flutes for marching band for the melody too. That is not supporting. Well in a way the entire band supports one another. I just think you are being too harsh on flutes. Maybe we aren't rockstar famous but it has been an instrument used quite frequently in many areas for centuries. Maybe the reason it's hard to find an individual solo player flute hugely famous is that there are so many flutits and fantastic ones too.

what a strange comment, I have played in bands, orchestras, recordings, early music, modern music, pop music, movies, tv shows and am finishing up a CD that is mostly popular arrangements with some new music...I have played every possible style of music in many settings, the only thing that would limit the flute would be the player

i'm with alieannie, i can't believe i'm commenting on this thread, but there is no best/most important instrument. the importance of a given instrument within a composition is assigned by the composer. could you imagine 1812 without trumpets? sorcerer's apprentice without bassoons? daphnis and chloe without flutes? the "my instrument is better than yours" debate will fade with maturity.

Agreed. I think it is just pure ignorance on anyones part to say that a certain instrument is the best.

Trump, I get what you are trying to say and I agree with you. Sure, any great flutist can play any type of genre of music on the flute, but another instrument might sound more suited fro some things. I like classical on the flute, but I love to hear a good clarinetist play rag time.

You must live in a bubble. The flute is a universal folk instrument. It is appropriate in all the world's music and styles and as such there are far more flute album sales than any other wind instrument.

For example albums on Amazon:
Flute - 11,292
Trumpet - 4,178
Sax - 2,180
Trombone - 1,300
Tuba - 465

Just googling or youtubing should pull some interesting results on all instruments in various styles.

There's some interesting rock and reggae bands with accordions.

We all know this is a touchy subject, so why don't we just all agree to drop it before another war breaks out on the forum. I really don't think this is an appropriate subject.

Avoidance doesn't answer my questions.

For the immature here, please leave and do not post. This brainstorming session is only for the mature-brained.

That should solve our problems!

BTW - Flutesandpiccolos, your control-freak posts are not welcome in this type of forum. People can post what they want to add. You do not decide when and what they will write. Just wanted to let you know.

I completely agree with Ann. I think we are just going to get ignored though
You would think that an Adult would know when enough is enough. Trump is very smart for his age, but please, I think this whole debate should end.

On a side not, is anyone else having trouble with this site being very slow? I am not sure if it is my computer or not, but the other sites I get on seem to be fine except this one.

Many people may get offended. If you and Micron would like to continue the debate, might I suggest you contact each other in private? Just a suggestion

What's with all of this control-freak posting about don't talk about this and go somewhere in private with Micron (NOT recommended, by the way)?

An online flute forum is the most logical place to speak about homosexuality that I could imagine. Are we really debating the presence on this planet of Gay flutists?

What we should be debating is how the Gay mafia keeps all of their "made" men in the top spots in the world's orchestras and bands.

By the way, if your computer isn't working well, this is not the forum to talk about that. Please take that over to the 8notes.com "Site Support" forum. They can help you learn how to navigate the 8notes web pages more efficiently.

You are in the right forum for this topic. The original topic and the subsequent one are ALL about the flute.

The ideas presented today conjure up images in the mind of deeply troubling acts. Kids these days don't need that stuff bumping around their brain.

My solution is that anyone under the age of 18 stop reading this forum topic now. That way we can get down to business.

LOL!!

I recommend that you ask a parent before any more reading on this dirty, dirty disgusting forum.
