i've began writeing full scores for my marching band to play at football games. i know the ranges technicalities for all the instruments i we use but the picolo.
i've just been trying to figure out the range of a picolo.
is it the sames as a flutes, only up an octave?

Yes ... almost!

The lowest register isn't much use outdoors; the highest few notes can be tricky. I'd tend to stick to the written G-to-G (as shown) most of the time. (Sounds an octave higher.)






(One of my favourite sounds is low-register piccolo in the appropriate setting – get a player to demonstrate it next time you get the chance.)
