i am loking into buying a powell.
what is the difference between the philharmonic and boston cuts?
i hae tried both but not sure which is which.
i want then one that you can getthe bigger sound and has a wider tonehole.
does anyone know which is which?
also, does anyone know anything about the soloist cut?
I have tried all the Powell style headjoints, but what I may perceive as having the biggest sound and so on, you may have an entirely different opinion on it. What I would recommend is if you are able, try each cut in a blind test and go from there. If you start analyzing the shape or cut of the headjoints too much it can make the process of choosing one that much harder. They can not be labeled or described entirely as we all play differently and will all sound differently when given the same headjoint to play.
It doesn't mean much, but my favorite style was the Venti. Good luck with it!
haha Kara is right! Don't get caught up with the descriptions, it will only drive you nuts. We're both powell fanatics, too.
I've owned a Boston cut and have trialed a few philharmonics. I've yet to try the venti. I felts the Boston had a big, pure sound but lacked depth/color, which the philharmonic had more of, at the trade off of a little less sound. But the philharmonic is a little more resistant (takes a little more air) so I think if I owned one and had some time to work with it, I could get just as big a sound as on a boston.
I do want to buy a philharmonic in the future. I currently have a Burkart, which I plan to keep till death do us part. That's an awesome headjoint!
