Is it possible to purchase the flute part for a broadway musical? I played My Fair Lady about 10 years ago with a local high school group and I believe the music was rented. I'd love to be able to purchase a copy of the flute part for it.

The vast majority of music for shows is only available for hire from the publisher.

they can be hard to get, and are often un-readable to boot! they are very careful about letting them out..

if you want the music from songs then musicroom.com has lots of differant books where you can get alot of differant songs (i'm getting one from sound of music for either flute or clarinet, i forgot which i ordered in the end) otherwise if there a performing arts library near you then you can get alot of music from there (i'm not sure where else has one apart from near where i live)

Generally, the music is rented as you remembered.
