"Dean Yang, Trevor James, Pearl, & Jupiter ?"

I dont jknow anything about Dean Yang, Trevor James flutes good for students, Pearl also, wich most of people doesn't like it, Jupiter is really sucks.... If you would like to have a nice student flute get a Yamaha 211/221 wich are the best student flutes. If you want with a silver headjoint try the 300's series. If you want a nice one try the Altus 907 or Miyazawa PA 101, or Muramatsu EXIII, but Sonare flutes are also really nice ones with the powell signature headjoints. My opinion about Altus is when I tried it... uhhh well... i don't know how to explain but it didn't have that sound what a sonare one produced. That's my opinion. You have to try a bunch of flutes, u have to decide it.

Here's my opinion, for what it's worth:

I have a Trevor J James TJ-SPALTO flute. I paid $1,550 a little over two years ago. I see at Fluteworld's web site that they don't have that same model listed, but they now list a TJ-AFP that has all the same major features (silver plated body, keys, footjoint, and straight, silver plated headjoint) that is listed for $1,723.

I love my alto and have not had any problems with it whatsover. My instructor has played it and she also loves how it plays and thinks its'a great flute.

The Pearl 206 is probably the best of the reasonably priced ones.(IME of course). I'd rate the Sonare as about equal(bit more money though). Both are affordable.

The others don't really play much better, and who wants to pay $3000+ for an alto flute? There are real pro models of course, but they tend to start at $5-10K and up, which is pretty much them just being usurious. If you really want that sound, just get their headjoint and put it on a Sonare or Pearl body. Even if Powell is cutting some corners lately with their budget line, it still has the same scale and tuning as their main line flutes. And that's what really matters.

Note - get the Silver headjoint but plated body models - no need to pay a ton extra for a silver body, especially when weight is a concern.

Trevor james all the way.Super instrument, have used in professional orchestras.i have silver lip and find it produces enough variety of tone and projection for orchestral setting.Same as a concert flute try lots of the same model, especially headjoints as in this price range there can be some differences but also there can be a really super headjoint waiting for you.Great intonation on Trevor James and very comfortable and light.
