Hi I want to go to a flute summer camp for summer 2010.

I am ABRSM grade 8, play in the top orchestra in my highschool (private), and have been playing for six/seven years.

I am considering Tanglewood, Interlochen, New England Conservatory, etc...
Other than that, somebody recommended smaller music camps, such as Kinhaven, Point Counterpoint, Sewanee Music Festival, Brevard music, and Chautauqua summer music...

Anybody know which ones are hard to get in, and if they are experiences for flute playing? Also, will these camps impress college admission officers?

Wow, you've got all the important ones there. Tanglewood has always been special to me. I had a freind who thought Interlochen was not flexible enough for him, which might be exactly what you want. New England Conservatory I don't know anything about their summer camp. Your smaller music camps are all good. I know a couple people who revere Brevard.

Are you ABRSM through the USA testing, or are you living in the UK? Have you thought about what college you want to go to?I bring this up because I went to a specific summer camp a couple times of the college I wanted to go to.The last year I also went to a different camp as well. The other camp offered me a nice package to go to their school. Later, the school I really wanted to go to offered me a nicer package and I transfered over to there. If they didn't know me they wouldn't have gone out of their way to get/recruit me.

So If you're thinking of going to NEC you might want to go the NEC camp. Check the faculty of the schools you are interested in and then see if any of those faculty are at any of the camps you want to go to. Then when you are at that camp make it a point to greet them each day and listen to what they say. Nothing is better than having a 'friend' where you want to go.

well Karrie Michael it is not too bright of you to give your full name and inclose where you go to school on a chat forum. and who cares if you are second chair? for all we know the rest of the flutists in the band are all horrible. so that doesn't mean much.

Welcome Krr_Michael! Glad you found a camp you seem to really love. (Now, do follow Binx advice since it's kind of sensible.)

As for flute summer camps, I attended NEC's pre-college Saturday program throughout the school year for my last two years of high school, and the Summer Metropolitan Flute Festival Orchestra for two summers. I found them both to be amazing experiences. Studying with my brilliant flute teacher there dramatically improved my playing, and the flute orchestra really got me interested in the world of big flutes and extended technique. I can't speak for the summer camp that you're referring to, but if it's anything like the programs I was a part of, you won't be disappointed.

You hit the target right on the head! time wasters annoy the heck out of me! this forum could be much more productive if people would just read the posts before posting! It goes around and around with the same old stuff. people asking which model is better or what flute should i buy or saying stupid things that open holes are better on the sound or asking about solid silver, or B foot verses C foot or talking about chairs. It has been hashed out so many times! Does no one know how to google anything anymore or use the search button on this site? It is just pure laziness! Give me about 5 minutes and i can google and find out just about everything about a product. It isn't that hard people! Also, show other people respect by at least bothering to read their posts first before jumping in on a subject. I see things repeated many times that had just been written by another user in the SAME thread!

Nice clarification, Binx! I do see how some posts can be frustrating and not well thought through. Nevertheless, to me it's not ok to reply with critical remarks.

Questions that may seem uninteresting to some flutists might still have a value for others. And sometimes a post of an "old" question with a different angle might create interesting discussion. These issues are not always black or white. When meeting with friends, I'm not really worried about always having an efficient/productive discussion as long as it is interesting or useful in some way, and I think the same should be true for forum discussions.

It is important to me that the forum is supportive and a place where flutists can feel welcome. When someone posts a silly comment, I would suggest to either ignore it and continue to something more interesting, or to comment on it in a friendly and helpful way. We dislike other peoples actions all the time, but that does not mean snubbing (if that's a good word for it) is proper, or that it would change anything.

Ok, that said, let's return to more flute related topics.

I would really recommend Tanglewood. I was there in 2006 (in the Young Artists Wing Ensemble and the flute workshop) and both were valuable experiences. LOTS of very dedicated people at Tanglewood for sure.
