hi! so I'm auditioning for the University of Washington music program. I'm having a very hard time finding appropriate audition pieces. I'm suppose to find 2-3 contrasting pieces and the audition must be 10-15 minutes long. i'm in really big trouble right now. first i have a question. what grade level of music would the UW music program expect me to be able to play? i know that they are expecting you to have had years of private lessons, which i haven't, I've just been in band for 8 or 9 year, so i can't play like crazy fast or any things. i can play level 5 music with a little bit of difficulty, and i haven't tried to play level 6 pieces yet. would level 5 music be okay? second i only have three weeks to master 2 to 3 pieces. no i haven't been procrastinating. it's just i'm having trouble finding appropriate pieces. so for i have one. Andalouse by emile pessard. i figured that it would be a nice piece. it's not to hard, it's pretty and I'll be able to master it in a short while ...so can someone help me find one or two pieces that would be appropriate for me and for the audition? btw i won't have an accompanist

Being difficult to point this or that peace, basing only in your report here, I'd still suggest something like the Fantasia by Fauré, one or other J.S.Bach Sonata, and why not, a concert from Mozart. Why should I suggest such known peaces like those? Because they show clearly the flutist one can be. Now, with such a short time to prepare, you sure have a Hercule's job to do. Good luck! I wish you the best.

you need to show a piece from each era, such as a baroque sonata, mozart concert, late 19th century french piece, such as Faure or taffanel or Gaubert, 20th century piece such as Poulenc sonata or Martin Ballade, etc...

I agree with Patrick: playing pieces from different eras show an audition judge that the player is versatile, and with a wide repertoire. I would also like to add that playing pieces with different textures and speeds is a good idea. Try to play one slower piece that lets you demonstrate tone and vibrato; a slow movement from a Bach or Handel sonata, the middle movement of the Poulenc, the Faure fantasie, possibly the third movement of the Bach partita (?), or something of that sort. Then, focus on a faster piece that lets you demonstrate your quick technique but still compliments your tone: perhaps the third movement of the Poulenc, a baroque allegro (or presto), or the first or third movement from either Mozart sonata, etc.

Pessard's Andalouse is a good choice because it has technically demanding sections and slower, tone-intensive sections. Also, attempting the tempo changes that the composer asks for shouldn't be hard without an accompanist...

To add to the quickly growing list or pieces, I would like to add the Chaminade. About 7 minutes long (and ridiculously overplayed!!!) this concertino lets you demonstrate your tone and technique. It might be hard to do without an accompanist though....

I hope this helped!

I auditioned for just one undergraduate school and just one graduate school (on piano, not flute--sorry) and passed both. Here's the thing: I wasn't allowed to finish a single piece at either audition. So if you're absolutely desperate, you might focus most of your time on the beginning of pieces. I don't guarentee this will work, but it might be worth a thought.
