I don`t know whether to quit the school band because the conductor is really horrible - he seems to always pick on me and he even didn`t let me play at a national festival. I don`t know why he hates me because I am quite a good flute player and I am doing my grade 8 soon, and the only reason I can think of is that my brother left the band and maybe the conductor is taking revenge out on me? Please give me some suggestions on what to do!!!

I say keep with it. First off when you hit HS you`ll have a new director anyway so it doesn`t matter. and Second if you can`t think of why he is how he is ask him. Tell him you enjoy band but he seems to be unfair to you and ask him whats going on.

National festival, is that a group thing where everyone plays as a group to be juged? If so, then it is the band directors fault if the group sounds bad, wether you play good or bad. Your band director must be greedy up to the point where he will take out all the bad players for the group to sound good and win, but then it wouldn`t be a group anymore. Band conductors are teachers, and teachers are suppose to teach, so if the teacher sees that you are doing something wrong, then he should tell you what you are doing wrong and correct you, if he doesn`t do that, he should quit his conducting career and work at K-Mart. But anyway high school should be a lot better for you assuming you dont have the same director. :-)

Quiters never get anywhere. You didn`t start to quit. If you feel this instructer isn`t acting properly, talk to the person. Be bold but polite. Tell the person you don`t know whether the way he treats you is intentional or possibly your reading into it. (that will keep him from going on the defensive). Say, I feel...include having been left out of the National Festival and that you don`t understand. Ask him to inform you if his action is a result of something you did, your brother`s leaving the band or maybe something else. Tell him you look forward to being best player but have considered leaving do to the way you feel you are treated. Ask him to explain. He can`t back out of that. He will have to give you some explanation, and at the sametime he will see your dedication.
