hi folks.,..
i`m currently principal in my orchestra (wooho!) and i have an assistant who plays with me...however, sometimes he doesn`t seem to understand that solo passages are best played alone..and same with pp`s but he doesn`t listen..ontop of that...he doesn`t practice so he messes me up while we`r playing

whats the standard rule of thumb for assistants?

i dont want to be over reacting

thanks

If he has problems, you should give him a good lecture on Mozart or something or for better, tell someone, I don`t know, maybe a director that he needs to do something else. He should be helping you play solo`s just a bit, maybe when there are continuous playing, or when you don`t feel that good or something. He shouldn`t bother your flute playing

tell him straight up to practice... jeez, if you`re in an orchestra practising is mandatory...

I used to be in a band where I was the only flute player practicing. So frusterating!

Here`s a suggestion, why don`t you just beat him over the head with his flute. Either that or know him off of his chair when he is playing so he drops his flute and messes it all up. Then he wouldn`t be a bother. At least not until he got his flute fixed again.

if you`re sitting higher than he is, then tell him outright that the solos and stuff are your parts and not his. it`s orchestral standards (at least that`s what i`ve been going by in the past 5 years in a symphony) so it`s not like you`re being a snob or anything, it`s standard procedures.
good luck!

I have the same problem. I hate it! Just tell him straight up. Dont be too nasty about it, cuz no one likes to be put down, but thats how it goes. It aint ur fault that ur better and the kid dont wanna accept that fact, so tell him. Good luck!

There was this one babyish girl in band that would say, "This music is soooo cooooooool!" or barge in when I was asked to demo, "Mrs. ____, I can do THAT!!" ARGH!
