Hmmm...I always thought that I preferredthe higher notes but now I'm not sure. I love the range that the clarinet has. The lower notes are so pleasant to hear and it's a very tough call for me personally but I'd say the lower notes.

Sorry, I didn't clarify. When I said that "I always thought that I preferred the higher notes," I meant that it was my opinion for last year.

i think the low notes can sound really mellow and beautiful but i love how huge the clarinets range is. i recently switched to saxophone and felt really deprived!

on soprano clarinet, i like low. they are obnoxious when they get too high.
bass clarinet, i love it all! low is really fun to play, but high sounds really pretty... it really depends on what i'm playing i guess. sometimes you just need to be grinchy and low

My friend plays the contrabass clarinet and the low notes are quite fun.

Luckily, the clarinet has a wonderfully large and extensive range. I like notes in the Chalumeau register, but a good clarinet player with a good clarinet can easily make the high notes(like around the break) sound fantastic! I don't think I have any preference, so I love it when you hear a clarinet player performing a piece where his range jumps all over the place.

personally, i like the middle/high range of contrabass clarinet better. sure, the lowest ones are super fun in that fog-horn sort of way, but they practically don't sound like notes. A on the staff and above, though- ooo they're smooth and pretty

I like different qualities of both ranges, but one important thing to remember is that the key to good tone in the upper registers is good tone in the lower register to start with. The high notes are only fun if they sound good.

I am a low wind kind of person so i love the low range but the clarinet it the only instrument where the high range can give me goose bumps! the clarinet really is a special instrument when it comes to range and timber, both of which are so differantly amazing i feel left out playing the saxophone but i like the sax more sorry
