Just practise hard and good luck. Pick pieces that you find interesting. Don't pick stuff that is really boring. Believe me that I was not thrilled play crap that I didn't like like Canticum. OMG that was a boring piece because it was too easy. Find something that is hard with 16 notes that is around your playing level. For me that is a 4 - 4+ piece. You can play Pirates of the Carribian or A Whole New World from Disney Classics. Also you can find Harry Potter and All American Rejects in Clarinet.


I wish you all the best and keep playing that clarinet and don't give up . It takes time to be really good at it and well...some are gifted musicians that can pick it up quick.

Just remember this (listed in order of importance): 1. relax! 2. Your airflow! 3. Embouchere 4. Your fingers 5. Tounging and articulation
And it's not how long you practice, it's what you do in the time you practice! Start off by playing scales or a simple piece you know. Then look over a new piece and play it slow to start with. NEVER OVER PRACTICE!!!! I repeat NEVER OVER PRACTICE!!

If your embouchere is tired, give it a break for the day and resume your usual practice iteniary the next day. Try to pratice every day. If you do these things and if you try real hard, you could be the next Benny Goodman!!

Teachers are of no help. They are just glorified baby-sitters. You pay them tons of cash and they just say 'this time with feeling' and then they send you home!

Contrary to what Micron says, you should always play with the actual sheet music. How are you supposed to know what you are playing?

Rythem is very important!! I advise you to read The Clarinet and Clarinet Playing. It is by David Pino.

Many things are important but rhythm is not one of them. I would say swabbing your clarient correctly is important, but not rhythm.

I totally agree with what Micron said and would like to add:
When you have a 16th notes run, practice with different rythms
(dotted 8th - 16th; 16th - dotted 8th; 8th - 16th - 16th etc.)

Also, don't neglect the warm-up... I consider my practice in 3 parts: Warm-up (where I improve in GENERAL), pieces (where I improve the pieces I'm working on) and fun.

Actually going against what Phil-McCrevis said, private teachers can make all the difference in the world, its just a matter of finding one thats good. I have went through many teachers before finding one i liked that helped me improve my playing techniques. If your band provides a clarinet teacher thats probably the easiest place to start and if you feel like your not accomplishing anything after a month or two with that teacher move on and look around at the music stores, which most offer private teachers or have some connections to good teachers.

Try and practice for 3 hours a week.

Try about 30 mins a day and never cram it all in in 2 days.

Regular practicing is good.

Just practice as much as you can. Sometimes I don't want to practice but i do any ways. I try to practice every day. Good Luck!
