is it bad i can hit a C twice above the staff on a normal Bb soprano student clarinet....
my reed was a rico 3
my mouthpiece was a giglioti
and my clarinet was a Buffet
Ya no problem there. I had a 6th grade student who could race around the extreme altissimo range. Couldn't count to save her life but you can't have everything I guess
I love that C! I'm trying to master that whole area right now for high school auditions. If you get that down, then you should try overtones or popping different notes out while holding the same fingering. That's one way to possibly get higher, but I haven't gotten anything higher than that C out. By the way, the fingering is as follows...
x-open
o-closed
x x (on staff Ab side key)
o
o
x
o
o
x (this is the top space Eb key)
If you haven't worked out notes below this, then do so first. This C is almost useless (as in barely seen in clarinet music) but it makes the normal high notes not so bad. My clarinet teacher did say she had to play the note at the end of a 10 minute jazz piece, so I guess clarinet music may get up there when it is advanced, but in high school that will not happen!
When you'e playing up there just try not to get the notes by shoving the mouthpiece in your mouth further than normal. This is tempting to do to make them play easier.
