My friend's daughter's clarinet broke and the guy at Schmitt music has offered to sell her his vintage Bundy Selmer clarinet for $300. Is this a good deal? We don't know anything. What questions should she ask? He's doing new cork, new pads, tenon corks, keys polished and refitted. We've asked for a model number.
$300 is far too much to pay for a used Bundy IMHO, even one that has been professionally serviced. You can get one on eBay for around $50 and perhaps pay around $100 for re-padding, corking etc, if it needs it.
I agree with Alan $300 is way to much, half that at the very most if it is in perfect condition.
Selmer stopped making Bundy instruments nearly twenty years ago as far as I know.
Should be able to pick up a decent second hand bundy , or vito for around US$70 - 150.
Then get it tuned up at your local shop , may need a few pads changed and keys adjusted.
I managed to pick up a good second hand Buffet B12 for US$190
and just brought two vitos - one for US$75 and the other $36 (needs a complete pad change and smells bad).
If you find a few you think might be suitable on ebay, you could post the links here and get some feedback.
