I have just "inherited" a black and gold Schill Clarinet. Its looks like new and from what i gather its severl years old. I would like to use it but im not sure of the quality or value of the instrument. Its model number is SR990. If anyone has any information that is helpful I would be vey gracious.
Thank You

A mass produced Chinese import. I have heard that it has poor intonation and that the keys are poorly made and can easily break. A technician I spoke to said that the cost of trying to make it play properly would be ten times it's cost new.

Sounds like it might be best to convert it into a table lamp.

My first Clarinet was a Chinese (or something) Lindo. (Some people on the Forum laughed!) Not actually plastic, but bakelite! which is an early form of brittle plastic used to make light fittings. Then I moved on and got a wooden Noblet. But I didn't make a lamp stand out of the Lindo, I kept it. Recently an aquaintence of mine expressed a desire to play the clarinet, which he had been harbouring for years! So I was able to give him the Lindo to get him started. He was de-light-ed, (excuse the pun) to get it to play his first notes. So maybe don't make it into a lampstand yet, maybe someone ...

Here's the real dilema. I had a Bundy clarinet that lasted until this summer when i dropped it and put a hole in it. So I've been using a friends clarinet, and just recently I quit band so I had to forfit my use of the instrument. Thus, the Schill is all I have, and I have an audition in 3 months, I know that the Schill won't work for the audition, but is it even worth practicing with?

well if i i all you have then you can use it to practice tecniques but i'd recommend getting a new one asap, unless you decide you like it.

Play on the instrument. If it sounds like a turnip, put it in the pot. If it makes anyway a decent sound then use it to practice. You have 3 months to practice and get another one b4 the audition.
