How difficult is a difficult song?

I`ve been playing clarinet for a while now and I`d like to know how good I am. So what kind of song is difficult one? For example, right now the song I find hardest that I`m playing is Concerto Grosso (http://www.music-scores.com/vivaldi/composer.php). Is that a hard song? Give me an example of an easy, intermediate and a difficult song. (Just because everywhere the ratings differ)

I know Flight Of The Bumble Bee is hard. I find it rather impossible. I can`t imagine anyone playing it with a woodwind. Or dares someone to claim he/she can play it properly?

An easy song is Mary Had a Little Lamb
An intermediate song is any one of the Schumann Fantasy Pieces (although the 2nd two are slightly more advanced)
A difficult song is the Nielsen concerto
An extremely difficult, how-on-earth-is-it-possible-to-play-this song is the Corigliano concerto.

Anyone have any idea where to find those Nielsen and Corigliano concertos?

I have a friend who`s only in 9th grade, she`s a flute, that can play the Flight of the Bumblebee properly.

Harry Potter is the hardest to learn to play. Symphonic band(bad band) will play the E flat suite but idk what our wind ensamble(aka the good band) is gonna play other than New York 1921

Well, you won`t find the Nielsen and Corigliano concertos for free. I don`t have them yet, but I`d say the best thing to do would be to call different music stores and see if they can get them.

The Nielsen and the Corigliano can both be purchased from Luyben Music. It will run you about a hundred bucks US though. How hard is the Corigliano? I know very quality musicians who have spent a year doing it. If you think a concerto gosso is difficult, I would not consider doing either the Nielsen or the Corigliano! From an educational standpoint, the Corigliano does not serve a real educational value. I have seen the piece, heard the piece, but thats as far as I care to look. Too many other good pieces out there. It would be difficult to do, as the scoring calls for an odd orchestral setup.

Maybe not as educational value, but it does serve as a challenge, and if you can successfully manage it, then you can say "I am a GOOD clarinettist".

I would think that to say one is a good clarinetists there are other pieces of far greater importance to master. If you have gone through the entire list of the top 50 asked orchestral exceprts, exhausted the list of probably the top 20 major solo clarinet works, then I might do the Corigliano. But to just do it to say I am good...sorry. Too many people cannot play Mozart in time, yet alone try to play the Corigliano? I am not saying this is you, as I have no clue as to your skill level. Just a common answer I am throwing out.

I can play the Mozart in time easily. Getting it so that I`m satisfied with it, however, is a different matter.
My level of playing is reasonably high- enough so that I can do stuff like the Spohr concerti with relative ease.
I was thinking of getting an orchestral excerpts book, I`ll need to be good at them if I ever want to be in an orchestra. Do you know of a good one?

The one I use is the Bonade excerpt book. Most sheet music stores(online too) will have a copy of this. It is relatively cheap, being about $10 US. There are some other good ones too, being the International set with McGinnis/Drucker. These are slightly more if I am not mistaken. I am sure though that you know that there is no good substitute though for the actual part, as the Bonade has its share of errors. But for the notes, the Bonade book is pretty good. I know that you are in a college setting, so perhaps the orchestra library will have a good amount of parts. Perhaps the local teacher, or your teacher will have many of these parts too.

I don`t have a clarinet teacher, so I`ll just have to go out and buy the book myself.
