I got mine 2 days ago. I got the sound out it right away. It sounds right so hopefully it is. My teacher said shell let me play it but I have teach myself the fingerings and Embrochure. And she said I could stay in Advanced band! YAY!

oboe isn`t the easiest instrument at all. You must be a new player or something. I`ve been playing for 6 years. The first 2 years were easy but when you start having long practices and start to produce a good sound it will take the toll on your body. I get really bad headaches and see dots etc. The longer you play in a day the more it hurts, wait tell your Embrochure is totally dead and you can`t even keep your lips on the reed.

But it`s still the greatest instrument ever! And your a truely talented person to be able play it.

EXACTLY, I know what you mean Heather, I`ve only been playing for 1 week, but I do see a great improvement, since I love music and have past experiences etc... anyways, at first, I relied so much on my mouth to push the air, my mouth hurt so bad, and yes my head hurt, but after getting tips from my piano teacher, a former bassoonist, to not rely on the mouth and use your diaphragm muscles, and push from the stomach, I got way better, and now I don`t think of playing the oboe as a pain anymore!

AND, the oboe IS NOT the eaisiest instrument! I mean come on... such a small hole, a duck sound, takes so long for a lovely sound like youre supposed to get, and DO NOT diss the bassoon! It is my favourite instrument even though I`ve only touched it before, but it has around 22 keys. Is that easy? I don`t really think so... and plus, the range of notes... BUT I still love the bassoon and I WILL play it next year...!

I don`t think calling something easy is a diss, however I do think that in this case the statement was wrong. I play/have played several instruments and I find oboe to be the most difficult. It has the hardest emboucher and like Heather and Riki said it`s incredibly hard to produce a good sound. But I also agree that it`s the best! When you do get a good sound out of it it`s beautiful and unique!

It really depends on where you come from I guess. I found switching from flute to Oboe much easier than to Alto Sax. Of course many would argue the Sax is easier to learn... I found the "open mouth" embouchure on a Sax a bit too uncomfortable/blech and I never enjoyed practicing/playing my Sax. If I MUST play it then I will put in some practice, but otherwise it`s Flute `n Oboe.

Sometimes your passion will dictate your impression of how difficult something is. I switched from sax and for a while debated whether to go for clarinet or oboe. Everyone and their mother told me to do clarinet because it`s so much easier and I wouldn`t have to deal with the reed mess. Well, in the end I went with my gut feelings and picked the oboe. HURRAH! I did take trial lessons on both at the same time during the month of December. And while the oboe was indeed frustrating I actually had more trouble on the clarinet. The embouchure wasn`t hard but the open tone holes were impossible for me to cover up. The oboe hand positions and fingerings actually seemed more intuitive to me.

Now I`ve been playing oboe for almost 7 months and it is indeed a challenge. But I love it so much that I don`t see this as a bad thing. It`s a labor of love.

Bottom line, when you don`t like the instrument it will seem even harder. So if you really love the oboe sound don`t worry about how hard it is. You`ll get along just fine.
