Lately I've been trying to figure out how to produce a vibrato, but all the sites I've been to don't describe it very well. Can somebody tell me how? Thank you thank you THANK YOU.

Actually, I don't know how I really learned vibrato. I think i just practiced a lot making a "sss-sss" with my reed and then transfering it over to my oboe. There is also stomach vibrato, but sometimes it might look a little exagerated.

Throat vibrato, in my opinion, is the best. It gives you the most control. Practice squeezing your throat when you are playing.

P.S.- a lot of people say to listen to oboe solos and such and listen to the vibrato. that might help

Thanks. No, I don't have a private lessons teacher. I tought myself how to play, since the band teacher doesn't know much about oboe. So what I should do is "vibrato" on a reed, then do the same type of thing when actually playing?
Thanks so much!

vibrato is really something that comes natural to a player. If you have good wind support, which you need for the oboe, it should devolp. Pratice long tones up the cromatic scale from low Bb to high G (two otaves and a half octaves about low C)

There are many different types of vibrato that can be produced. Throat, diaphram. But the vibrato that is the best and used by many professionals is Diaphram vibrato. Yes, at first you have less control and it is alot harder than throat vibrato but it is the best to work towards.

Here are a few tips.

1. First you need to recognize the corrrect diaphram muscles. Try chuckling or "woofing" like a dog. The correct muscles are those that you sometimes feel aching after a good laughin session.

2. play a middle range note such as a tuning A. Practice "punching air". The note should bend and also probaly sound quite horrible. Practice this and once you have more control move onto the next step.

3. put the metronme on crotchet = 60 and start pickiing out random notes from all ranges and do two punches per beat. Increase that to 3,4 and then 5 once you can do it really well.

Vibrato comes over time. It can take weeks or months to perfect it. Diaphram vibrato is the hardest but it gets the best and easiest results over time.
You should do vibrato practice every day.

4. Practice doing 4 punches on each note of a C major scale to co-ordinate your vibrato and finger movement.

practice the diaphragm vibrato. like a belly laugh. play a scale and do 4,6, and 8 wavers per note and it will come .same as on the flute.proper practice makes perfect..
