I don't know if this is normal but when i play my oboe for about an hour my teeth hurt really badly
Does this happen to anyone else? is there anything to do about it?
Thanks

Hi...yea sore teeth is quite common...it partly may be caused by you biting your reed to hard. So try and relax your embouchure and use more support so you dont have to bite.remember you embouchure should be quite relaxed when u put the reed into your mouth.
hope this helps!

Your back teeth and jaw can start to ache if you are using a reed which is too-restricted. This is easily explained by use of a wired reed - by very gently squeezing the sides of a moistened reed at the wire, this opens up the reed, allowing more air to flow through, which has the effect of reducing the pressure put on the jaw etc.. (please please please don't squeeze too hard - I have cracked a few reed straight down the middle doing this! You have been warned! :-) ).
Opening up the reed too much can create an uncontrolled "quacky" sound, so take care!

I used to have that problem too however my college oboe instructor made me play scales and hum simultaneously. This made the reed vibrate better, opened my throat and consequently made my teeth and jaw hurt less.
I hope this helps
