I was like that when I first started playing. It was because I didn't wetten it enough before playing so my teacher said you can carry a film case from cameras with water in and it would be easier to wetten it. With your reeds try and carry them in a case or something so they don't get damaged, I keep the reeds in the little boxes they come in. I'm not sure about where you can buy cheap reeds though, I get them from my oboe teacher, sorry! x

Yes, this is normal. My first year of playing oboe I went through so many reeds...I didn't expect them to be so fragile coming from playing the clarinet. Try to find a reed case that can hold 3-6 reeds. It will keep your reeds safe and you'll always have an extra just in case.

Cheap reed cases = reed problems. Get a nice wood box case and then get a teacher to rough out some blanks for you. Then get "The Art of Oboe Playing" and figure it out.
