I've been thinking about buying my own oboe, at the moment I have a Bundy oboe that was given to me by the school, but I want to get one of my own because I know I'm going to carry on playing when I leave school.
I'm not sure which type to buy, which would be the best? As I don't want to spend loads of money if it's not a good one.
Also, they are quite expensive so would getting one off ebay be alright? Because I may be able to find cheaper ones as I don't have that much money.
Thanks x

If you're lucky you can get a good deal on ebay... but also you might not.
It is a bit of a gamble.

In my experience comments on ebay translate in real terms as

"Might need some minor adjustments" = "Will need most of pads replaced and adjustments done"
"Antique Instrument" = "You're on your own if it's out of tune, doesn't have modern keys etc"
"I'm not an oboe player, etc" = "This thing has some faults I try to get away with pretending I don't know"

Unless it is explicitly stated do NOT expect that it will be in playing order or come with all needed
accessories. To make sure ask the seller specific question about what exactly comes with it, if there are cracks in the wood etc.

If you can at all go to a local shop that specializes on woodwinds do so and see what they have on offer.
It might cost a little bit more but it'll save heaps of hassle later on.
If you can test play it, even better. Best if you can take a teacher along.

I did buy my bassoon on ebay but had to spend quite a bit to get it into a playing condition.
But still even with that combined expense it has still been cheaper than a new horn or any other local horn
I saw for sale at the time.

Good luck
James
