"In addition, not making "uglies" which like little bumps and divots that disturb the vibrations of the reed. More over, making reeds consitantly is another major hurdle to cross. "

I've noticed that many of the professionals have small bumps or a "catch" between the back and heart. I asked my professor about this, and basically, the idea of a "catch" from the heart to the back is to help restrict the vibrations just a little, more as a way of controlling the vibrations, much like they have those thin metal wires on many of those beginner reeds.

there are many different thought processes to making reeds as well as styles. When i wrote that i was playing and making reeds that were as smooth as possible, now i've noticed some changes (ie. bumps) that seem to improve my playing. Each person is different and each person need to take time to see which style is best for them.

I make my own reeds, for the most part. I take the reed(s) that I made one week to my lesson on Sat/Sun and my teacher helps me finish them.

One time, I was at my desk and I was holding my oboe upright on the floor, reed in too, and the oboe slipped from my grasp. The oboe stopped at the desk, thanks to the reed. That was the end of my 2-day old reed that I had just bought (I still bought them from my old teacher).

I've been playing for 3 1/2 years. It took me all of 3 years of learning in the summer to finally learn how to make reeds. I made my first half-decent reed at Oboe Camp last summer.

;o I wanna make oboe reeds completely.

It seems hard though, I can only tie blanks right now.
