Hey,
I've just got a new reed on the advice of my teacher, i got the Jones Artist series. Its a medium soft but i've played it and it feels like medium. It was really hard to play, nothing like my old reeds. Its the first time i've tried these type of reeds. Also it feels like i cant get enough air thru it coz its so hard. How do i fix these problems? I know it might just be because im not used to the reed and its new, but any tips to help it along? Any help would be appriciated.

yeah... you need to adjust ur reed? your oboe teacher should be able to do that easily.. they'll open it up more.. adjust the tip and probably scrape some of the cane off. you dont need to do anything. i use my oboe teachers reeds so i dont use store bought cuz they suck hahaha
<Added>
you might also want to consider buying like a lower level of it.. cuz some reeds can be made differently than others.

Okay. First off, Jones reeds are the WORST. I used to play with them my first year as an oboist. I've been playing oboe for only 3 years and this'll be my fourth. I may not be the experience as a professional, but I know for a fact that JONES reeds are BAD. They are factory made and are done poorly. I recommend you use another brand. =]
Also, umm ... about the reed problem. It's probably just the reed. I'm used to playing a medium soft, too. I recommended u switch between different types b/c it'll help you in desperate times. What I do is I sometimes play on M.Soft's or just med. but it's your choice.
Hope I could help.

maybe their teacher doesn't make their own reeds? WHICH THEY SHOULD. you're private lesson instructor (if you take lessons) should make their own reeds... they would know how to adjust it based on the way you're playing.
