Does anyone know about the oboe reed shortage? Apparently there is one. Did a major company go out of business, or is this false?

Jones double reed went out of business, though that shouldn't be causing a reed shortage.
Well... if you bought Jones reeds. You need to find another brand!

Here where I live, there is a oboe reed shortage! We only get Emerald oboe reeds (which aren't that great). There aren't any Jones oboe reeds, La Voz oboe reeds, not even Rico oboe reeds anymore! It's the same case for bassoon reeds too, I believe. :S

I didn't know there was one. Interesting.
But, then again, I make all of my own reeds, so......

I agree with Canadian, as long as you are able to. I mean, working in summers alone (i mean that's all I had time to work), it took me 3 years (an a little practice during the school year I might add) to learn to make reeds, but I know some people who learned in 6 months.
'tis a matter of opinion to me.

Fox doesn't seem to be making reeds anymore either.
And it's a real pity Rico stopped, cuz I love their reeds... they last me a while (I've had one of my Rico reeds since November 2007. :P)

Jones makes Meason reeds, right? Because there are still a few shops in my area that carry those...

If Jones makes Measons, meaning the production of them stopped, I will cry. I love Meason bassoon reeds...They are always reallyyyyy good. Better than I make them.

Just curious...
has anyone here tried Marlin Lesher reeds?
I'm thinking about ordering some but don't want to order many unless I know they're good.

I make my own bassoon reeds, but I'm not yet skilled enough to make my own oboe reeds.

I wish I could learn to make my own reeds but there is no one anywhere near where I live that can teach me!
PS. to the person who was wondering about marlin lesher reeds They are ok but i find they are waaaaaaaay too soft and they were only lasting me a few days. So if you can't make your own reeds I would recommend buying some hand made ones. The ones I use come from Oboeworks.com.
