OK – here's a new topic (!!!) – I'm not an oboist but I'd like to write something for the instrument. I've done bits and pieces in the past (usually in the context of its presence in the wind quintet). Also, oboe and cor anglais sometimes snuck into the TV arranging I did in a previous life (lol).
Are there gaps in the oboe repertoire that might be addressed by composers generally? Could be in terms of solo works, accompanied or not, chamber combinations or whatever.
For instance: when you're performing the Mozart oboe quartet, is there an adequate choice of other material to go into the same program?
Or: at music camps, are there enough pieces of (say) a high-school level for large, ad hoc, double-reed ensembles?
Or: need more light "jazzy" material (for players who might be happy ad-libbing baroque embellishments but wouldn't necessarily know their way around "Giant Steps")?
It might be nice to have some new duets, especially with oboe and another wind instrument (including closely related instruments, like English horn). Since you mention the Mozart quartet, it would definitely be nice to have some more music with that instrumentation (oboe, violin, viola, and cello).
I like the oboe-plus-another-woodwind line of thought – feels like one that I (for one!) could get cracking on without an oboe and a (whatever) to hand, which is the current situation. Right now I'm throwing around some unaccompanied oboe ideas – some of these might morph into duet things. Will keep you posted!
An oboe-violin-viola-cello quartet would be great to have a shot at – possibly a medium-term proposition in my case.
What about Oboe and flute? My cousin plays oboe and it would be great to play something with him. In fact, i'm going to start writing some duets right now! lol....openin the old finale printmusic.
hmm...ill take a look! I was there looking for the Suite in A Minor a while ago and couldnt find it so I ended up ordering it from the store. I bet its there hiding somewhere though! lol
ok im a little confused...
level as in how well I play? If thats the case, here in Florida we grade our solos 1-7, and the Suite is a 5. So its the original, challenging one.
