Hi everyone! Here is a new topic! Ok, I live in a REALLY small town that is about 100 miles from the nearest oboe instructor. I really want to learn to make reeds though! I am sick of buying ones that I don't like so that makes me want to learn how to make them even more! Is there any way you can learn to make them from a book? I know i have seen a few that tell you how to make them. Is it worth trying? Any help would be appreciated!!

I'm not too sure that it actually is even possible to make reeds without an instructor. I guess your best bet is to take 4 or 5 reed making lessons or course probably 4 hours long. You can get the basics down that way, then you just have to do trial and error to find out what works.

I really suggest getting an oboist instructor though.

Yeah I'll see if I can even find one around here! I sometimes drive 2 hours to get to the nearest college that has an oboe instructor, so hopefully she knows how to make reeds! (or at least how to adjust them!)

I just found out that there is a teacher who makes reeds in the city where I have youth orchestra practice! I might take reed-making lessons from her!
