I am playing this piece on english horn for a contest. Was it originally written for english horn? I have heard that it was, but I tried to find a recording and all I could find was a clarinet playing it.

Actually I believe the Adagio you are refering to was originally written for Clarinet and 3 bassett horns. There is some controversey regarding this but, it is believed that the "como Ingles" was written in later, by someone elses hand no doubt.

It was surmised my Flothuis in 1968 that is was not for English Horn and probably for the Clarinet. But the title I believe is Adagio in f for winds. So it could be any instrument in the of F. which varied back then.
