Hi, well i am thinking about auditioning for the NYO (National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain) and i need two contrasting pieces that take about seven minutes.

Any suggestions?

Hey! I've been playing oboe for about 6months and have made awesome progress (if I do says myself) but I have to play contest already and a good slow pretty song that isn't super boring is like right up my alley..... I am playing The Winter's passed by Wayne Barlow....if you play it right it sounds so cool especially in the middle, it's 3/8 time for most of it, and you will need a piano accompanist try it out!!!

Hey thanks! I have just checked it out on spotify, but it says that it is an english horn piece. As much as i love english horns, i dont really want to audition with it. Also, do you know what grade this piece would be?

Thanks

Benjamin Britten: Metamorphosis after Ovid
Baroque Concerto/Sonata (I particularly like Telemann's F minor concerto)
Romantic piece (try Schumann's romances for oboe)
a solo from a symphonic work (dvorak or borodin work well, if you can get the score)

Thanks! I shall check these out! I find it funny how you say Schumann's Romanzens because I'm playing one of them for my grade 7 oboe exam next wednesday! Do you know what grades these pieces are?

I'm not sure. I know the Britten is fairly advanced, the baroque pretty low, and well- symphonic solos probably don't have grades. If you are going for the NYO, I suggest doing one or two movements of the Britten (probably one slow, like Niobe, and one fast, like Phaethon), and a fast easy piece to show off, like a baroque Allegro. In my experience, judges like these because they are harder than they sound. I did the Allegro of Handel's 8th oboe concerto, and the judges liked it so much they made me principal, placing me over someone who had been playing for five years longer!

do you think that i would be "marked down" if i played a piece that is unaccompanied like the britten pieces?

I'm not sure. If you have a private teacher, you might want to ask him or her. The symphonic excerpts might be problematic fro the same reason.
