My instructor is moving out of town and he is my only source of reeds. What brand of bassoon reeds should I start to buy?

This is a very personal thing. So if you can, try many kinds. You could always learn how to make your own.

I personally have had good luck w/ Jones reeds (you can get them for 6-7 bucks a pop online if you shop around). You will need to scrape them down quite a bit though (actually most any store-bought reed will need some refining). Try Soft and Medium-softs, as they will be a bit easier to play in tune. Post again if you have any other questions, I may be able to help.

I use Dominic Weir reeds from London. I have tried many reeds in my time and the Weir reeds are the best by far!

I strongly advise you try them.

Best,

Mark.

David Brundage with the US Army Band makes and sells very good reeds. (Also, contrabassoon reeds). They have a very bright quality, but play very well! : )

I would recommend seeing if you can make your own. Reeds are a very personal matter, and it is better to make them to your specific needs than to buy pre-made ones.
