Ok, it seems to me that my "bassooning life" is a never-ending war between me and my reeds. i just got new reeds, and they're all very airy sounding. when i blow, it sounds as if too much air is coming out and not enough of the bassoon sound. so far, i've been trying my best to see if soaking more them will work. i won't be taking lessons until about august and i don't know anyone who'll be able to work on my reeds anytime soon. i leave the country on a performance tour next week, and have a concert TONIGHT. i'm completely clueless now. any suggestions?

is the opening maybe a bit large ?
Gently squeezing the first wire might tighten it up and help a bit.
Good luck

Could air be leaking out the sides? You can check by putting your finger over the end and sucking on the other end. If so, try putting a little glue along the sides, or clear fingernail polish (I have used this in emergency).

Reeds are so awkward.
When having reed trouble you should use trial and improvement. Go through a checklist to see what the problem is. So:
Soak the reed
if you hear air leaking check the seal between the reed and the crook (you might need to ream the reed) and between the blades of the reed. Like someone else said, if there's a leak in the neck of the reed nail varnish is v.useful!
Check the opening and adjust the wires as appropriate.
Along with anything else I might have forgotten. Don't forget to test your reed on your bassoon every time you make an adjustment!
Good luck
