i want to learn how to play the bassoon any ideas? thanx

That`s not always true, I taught myself how to play flute, clarinet, oboe and bassoon and I play them all very well. So, you don`t always need a teacher to teach you. I also play alto, tenor, and bari sax.

Bassoon is a lot of fun to play. I started in 7th grade after switching from sax. I recently got into our high schools top band with it, so I guess I can actually play It was tough starting though cuz my band director had no idea how to play it and no idea how to teach me to play it, so it was kind of a trial and error deal for me, but heck it was well worth all those after school lessons. I suggest you use a school one if possible or something cuz bassoons are NOT cheap! Mine is 32 years old, but still plays well. Good luck on starting!!!!

I would talk to a band instructor and get lessons. It`s easier to do it right from the beginning.

It is possible to teach yourself the basics, IF you are a very dedicated student and you make available to yourself good learning materials, however, if you wish to progress past a certain point, you really need to find a COMPETENT bassoon teacher. Not a clarinet teacher or flute teacher who took a semester of bassoon as part of their MusEd requirement in college, but a real bassoonist. This is a VERY difficult instrument, and to play it expertly requires an enormous amount of discipline, work, and skill. Also, make sure you have a good instrument in good working order. Nothing will impede your progress like a recalcitrant instrument.

get lessoons from a good bassoonist you will lern best that way, if yuo teach yourself then you couldbe forming bad habbets that are really really diffacult to get out of. but bassoon is sweet!!!! definatly play it
